Miller Harris: History and Fragrance Activities
Foundation and Lyn Harris
Miller Harris is a British fragrance house founded in London in 2000 by perfumer Lyn Harris. The brand emerged from Harris's professional training in France and her earlier work with Robertet in Grasse, one of the major centres of the international fragrance industry. According to biographical material published by Harris's Perfumer H, she began her formal perfumery training in Paris with Monique Schlienger in 1992 and subsequently joined Robertet in Grasse in 1995. Before establishing Miller Harris, she also developed a bespoke fragrance practice in the United Kingdom and worked with fashion and beauty clients.

The company was established in 2000, with Companies House records confirming Christophe Michel's involvement in the business from the same period: he was appointed secretary of Miller Harris Limited in June 2001 and remained in the role until November 2005. Contemporary and later profiles describe Harris and Michel as the partners behind the foundation of the perfume and candle line.
From the beginning, Miller Harris was positioned around the idea of independent perfumery rather than conventional designer fragrance. The company's present-day history describes its founding principle as giving perfumers "complete creative freedom", while its creative approach combines French technical training with a contemporary British perspective.
The Early Collections
One of the earliest Miller Harris fragrances was Feuilles de Tabac, launched in 2000. The house currently describes it as an "original and iconic fragrance" created by Lyn Harris at the foundation of the company and associates it with the Editions collection, which marked the beginning of Miller Harris's fragrance journey. Its composition combines bergamot, sage and pine needle with cascarilla oil and pimento berries, followed by patchouli, tonka bean and tobacco leaf. The stated inspiration is the atmosphere of the cafés and brasseries of Saint-Germain in Paris.

Feuilles de Tabac, launched in 2000 by Lyn Harris, was one of the foundational fragrances of Miller Harris and marked the beginning of the house's Editions collection
The early Miller Harris portfolio developed around sophisticated interpretations of natural materials and familiar fragrance structures rather than a single olfactory signature. Among the creations associated with Lyn Harris's period at the house are Citron Citron, Rose Silence, Tea Tonique and La Fumée. The brand also became known for bespoke work and for treating perfume as a form of storytelling.
A particularly important creation was L'Air de Rien. Developed by Lyn Harris in collaboration with Jane Birkin, it originated as a bespoke fragrance reflecting Birkin's personal preferences and memories. Miller Harris dates the fragrance to 2006 and describes it as an unconventional composition centred on atmosphere, memory and intimacy rather than conventional perfume aesthetics.
Investment and International Expansion
A significant change in Miller Harris's corporate development came in 2012, when NEO Investment Partners invested in the company. NEO's own portfolio history identifies Miller Harris as one of its investments and describes the partnership as being intended to support the brand's international development through an omni-channel strategy. Contemporary reporting stated that the expansion was planned to include markets such as Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
The investment marked a transition from a primarily independent London perfume business towards an internationally distributed luxury fragrance company. Harris subsequently left the business; biographical material issued by her later company states that she exited Miller Harris in 2013, while other profiles place her withdrawal from active involvement in 2014. Formally, her directorship of Miller Harris Limited ended on 30 October 2014. By 2014, the company was working with perfumer Mathieu Nardin, and Harris subsequently established her own fragrance house, Perfumer H, in 2015.
Fragrance as Art, Literature and Storytelling
After its founder's departure, Miller Harris continued to develop the principle of giving perfumers a substantial creative role. The house describes its compositions as being created without rigid commercial briefs, with inspiration drawn from poetry, nature, memory, music and art.
An important example is the Stories collection. Scherzo, launched in 2018, was the first Miller Harris fragrance explicitly developed from literature. Perfumer Mathieu Nardin received only a passage from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night as his brief. The passage describes Rosemary Hoyt surrounded by flowers on the French Riviera, and Nardin translated the literary scene into a composition of tangerine and davana, narcissus, peony and dark rose, followed by patchouli, vanilla, oud and a sweet accord.

Scherzo, launched in 2018, was the first Miller Harris fragrance inspired directly by a literary work, drawing on a passage from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night
The same method was later applied to Staccato, inspired by Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, and Soufflot, based on a passage from Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. In both cases, Miller Harris states that the selected literary passage served as the perfumer's creative brief rather than merely providing a marketing theme.
Current Activities and Product Philosophy
Today Miller Harris operates as a London-based luxury fragrance house offering Eau de Parfum collections alongside candles, body products and related fragrance formats. The current portfolio includes established compositions such as Feuilles de Tabac, Tea Tonique, Rose Silence, Scherzo, Lumière Dorée and Étui Noir, as well as newer creations. The brand also provides fragrance profiling and bespoke consultation services through its retail operations.
Sustainability has become an explicit part of the company's contemporary operations. Miller Harris has held Positive Luxury's Butterfly Mark certification since 2018. The company states that its natural raw materials come from sustainable supply chains with traceability of provenance, and that its products are vegan and cruelty-free. Its current programme also includes MH Upcycled: according to the brand, 20% of its Eau de Parfums contain at least one upcycled material.

Miller Harris's present identity therefore combines several strands established during its history: British independent perfumery, French technical expertise, natural raw materials, collaboration with specialist perfumers, and the use of literature, art and memory as creative sources. The house's development from Lyn Harris's London-based practice in 2000 into an internationally distributed fragrance brand has preserved the original emphasis on perfumery as an artistic discipline while expanding its collections, retail presence and sustainability programme.
